ABSTRACT
This research work focused on the readability of English language textbooks and academic performance of students in English language.
The method used in the collection of data is through questionnaire which was designed and distributed to the students. They were administered to (120) one hundred and twenty students. Some of the findings is that students like to read informal materials such as magazines, journals, newspaper etc. students appreciate reading literature text/novels, reading is not taught as a skill in the schools, majority of the students do not participate in reading in their class which affects the readability of English language textbooks.
Therefore, it is recommended that there should be enough time allocated to learning reading as a skill in secondary schools, the teachers should avoid making themselves slaves to any particular textbook. They should also use other reading materials as a supplement to the basic text, the library should also be put in place such that there are adequate books, educative magazines, journals, newspaper etc.
The interest of the students should be considered in what the content of English textbooks will be so as to be motivated to read them.
In conclusion, if these recommendations are strictly adhered to it would go a long way in enhancing the readability of English language textbooks and academic performance of students in English Language.
